History of the Atal Setu:

Atal Setu is one of the most famous and longest bridges in Goa. This is the third bridge  built over Mandovi river. Before the construction of the First Mandovi Bridge in 1970, ferries were the main means of transportation between Panaji and Betin villages on the Mandovi River. Due to heavy traffic, the first bridge was built in the 1970. In 1986, the first bridge collapsed and was rebuilt. The second bridge was built in 1998 to accommodate heavy trucks. The construction of the third bridge started in 2014. The reason for building the third cable-stayed bridge is to accommodate heavy traffic, especially during the tourist season. The bridge was completed on  January 27, 2019.

On 14 June 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the third Mandovi Bridge. The bridge was completed and inaugurated by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on January 27, 2019; followed by Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar Parrikar was present alongside Goa's former Deputy Chief Minister and then Minister of State Sudin Dhavalikar. for the road. The bridge was named Atal Setu in memory of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The bridge was opened to traffic on February 5.

Larsen and Toubro (L&T) won the EPC contract for the construction and construction of the bridge with a tender of Rupees 403 billion ($50 million). It is a bridge connecting the first and second span, 15 meters higher than the two existing  bridges. It is the longest bridge in Goa and the third longest bridge in India. The bridge is a 900 m four-lane bridge with a 550 m cable stay section and a 3.2 km viaduct approach. The length of the main bridge is 600 m, its two ends are 75 m and the inner three ends are 150 m. The main bridge superstructure consists of concrete box girders with 3 m wide middle, 2 x 8.5 m double track, 21 m wide outer braced sections. Box girders are supported by cables  in the towers, with tension applied from the bottom of the box girders. Another level crossing starts from Merces-Old Goa ring road and connects to Mandovi Bridge to provide connectivity from Ponda to Panjim.

The renovation cost of the Bridge construction  was 5.5 billion euros ($69 million), and the price increase was 500 million euros ($6.3 million). Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) said that around 100 million liters of water was saved during the construction of the bridge.

During the establishment process, the Goa government claimed that the bridge would be financed itself. The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and the nodal institution signed a loan agreement for a loan of Γé¼4.626 billion ($58 million) on June 8, 2015. The original price estimate was 4.7 billion euros ($59 million) but it has now increased to 8.6 billion euros ($110 million). The repayment period of the loan is 12 years, and the government will pay 480 million euros ($6 million) in interest annually. Therefore, the total repayment amount to  NABARD in June 2027 is Γé¼8,664.4 million ($110 million). This bridge is the most expensive bridge in the history of Goa. [10] [11] On 20 March 2018, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari said the central government will cover 50 percent of the cost of the bridge, or 4 billion euros ($50 million), plus 500 million euros ($6.3 million) for the road connecting the bridge.
